In the first chapter of Making in Stick, Peter C. Brown et al, stress that rereading text, highlighting and taking notes is not an effective way to learn. He states that delayed quizzes seem to have the most impact on knowedge retention. Then is Chapter 3 he cites a study of kids in a PE class who throw bean bags. The children who varied their practice did better than the ones who only practiced from 3 feet. How can I put this to use in my modules?
My plan is to use existing online games and then quizzes made in Google Drive.
A few hours of searching turned up a jackpot of early learning resources.

While sketching out my modules I focus on varied repetition. Other sites that I like are:

Have you found any great sites for literacy?
Meagan,
ReplyDeleteI really like that analogy of the students playing with the bean bags. If we keep teaching students “step one, step two, step three” then we won’t be teaching them how to think and learn. Being a math teacher, I like to focus on the why. That way they are not memorizing the material but actually understanding it (at least hopefully they are haha). Thanks for the share!

I’m a believer in gamification for learning. I used to play a video game called Morrowind that had its own silly language, kind of like Klingon for Star Trek fans. The funny thing is, after many hours of playing, I started understanding the language! I wondered, if this was in French, would I eventually learn a useful second language??? Well thought out game aspects in learning have a way of naturally propelling learners forward without it feeling like education. People are naturally curious and love to learn new things, just not in the traditional lecture followed by test way.
ReplyDeleteTed,
DeleteThat sounds like a great way to learn a language! Four years of traditional Latin class and I remember about two quotes and how to conjugate nouns but that is it. Now I really want someone to create a SimCity like program that builds Rome and you speak Latin. Amo Latinum!
